Salterns Way & West Wittering ebike Tour
A lovely full day self guided ebike tour round the quiet lanes and villages around Chichester Harbour
Adults and older children riding e-bikes, tourers, gravel bikes or light mountain bikes. Not suitable for riders under 14 years old
Relatively easy route. Easy navigation, Very flat terrain but there are one or two road crossings to take extra care with.
We class this as a full day tour, (around 6 hours longest) allowing for plenty of stops and photo opportunities along the way
What's it like to ride?
Here is a video of our shorter half day route which misses out the West Wittering extension. But this gives a good idea of the type of riding to expect on this route.
First stop Bosham Village
Combining, gravel paths and small country tarmac lanes, the route takes you out from our pop up base at Concierge Camping in West Ashling and safely over a bridge which crosses the hustle and bustle of the A27 on to the quiet lanes and country roads towards Bosham, famous for its yellow ice cream van and the occasional car with water up to their wheel arches when they misjudge the tide. It is a very photogenic place to stop for a breather.
Get your sea legs ready...
You will then follow the coastal path towards one of the highlights of the tour, to the Itchenor Ferry crossing.
There has been a ferry service for 400 years here and they are well used to cyclists and their bikes. You can find out more about them here as well as checking crossing times and prices.
Once you make the short passage across you will re-connect with the Salterns Way on the other side.
To the Beach! West Wittering here we come
After the thrills of the high seas, it's a gentle ride down to the coast with the very popular West Wittering beach and cafe. So if you need another rest stop this is the ideal place to take a break.
East and West Wittering are home to stretches of unspoilt coastline, popular with visitors keen to enjoy the wide sands and shallow waters.
Back to the Salterns Way
Now it's time to head back, so you'll re-join some small country lanes and make your way back to reconnect with the Salterns Way.
Your next major landmark is Chichester Marina at Birdham. Be sure to hop across the lock gates for a more interesting route to the other side than the official Salterns Way and then you'll heading for one more beautiful viewpoint at Dell Quay.
And Finally...
It's a leisurely cycle back to your start point at Concierge Camping.
Along the way keep an eye out for Fishbourne Roman Palace, the largest Roman home in Britain and probably north of the Alps. Dating from around 75AD much of the palace has been excavated and is preserved, well worth a visit, but maybe save this for another day!
You'll soon be back at the start where we will be there to meet you. You are welcome to try the hospitality at Concierge Camping before you head off.
